Coronavirus (Covid 19)

Times are changing, the world is changing. It appears we are all having to rethink and reset.

Everyone must practise good hygiene to protect against infection and prevent the virus spreading.

When you practise good hygiene you:
– cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue
– put used tissues straight into the bin
– wash your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet
– use alcohol-based hand sanitisers
– avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
– clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces such as benchtops, desks and doorknobs
– clean and disinfect frequently used objects such as mobile phones, keys, wallets and work passes
– use consistent fresh air changes as much as is comfortably possible.

Fresh filtrated air change has been known to greatly manage the reduction of and spread of virus including influenza. Before the advent of antibiotics, ventilation and natural light were considered to be important safeguards against infection. Nowadays, there is less emphasis on fresh air and light in buildings. The focus is on structural isolation and recirculating air conditioning. Many of the studies on ventilation and health that were conducted a long time ago, which make it difficult to assess the evidence in relation to modern hospitals. There is some justification in reviewing current lighting or ventilation arrangements for better protection of patients and staff from airborne contagion.
The consensus of particle size, airborne transmission and air change in regards to air management is broadly mixed. Considering that Sars and Coronavirus are ‘droplet’ based, we would agree that increasing airflow and reducing humidity will both deplete any airborne droplets and reduce lifespan periods on materials including non porous.
